Featured Song: Star-Crossed Dreamer

When I’m in the mood for something uplifting and adventurous, Edenbridge never disappoints.

This is “Star-Crossed Dreamer”, from their latest album The Bonding. I really enjoy the build-up in this song, culminating in a beautiful guitar solo!

Featured lyrics:

Forever I’ll shine
The whole world is mine
A dreamer, a fancier am I

Enjoy, and Merry Christmas!

Featured Song: Arcana

Let’s hear some more “relaxing metal” from Edenbridge!

This post is the second stop on our journey through Edenbridge’s often-lengthy masterpieces that started with “My Last Step Beyond”. Today’s piece is the title track of Edenbridge’s second album, Arcana.

There is a sense is which this song is “more of the same” as “My Last Step Beyond”, both in terms of song structure and the overall feel, but I just find this style so enjoyable that I felt “Arcana” was worth featuring as well. The highlight of the song for me is the the passage between the two guitar solos in the second half: starting with a short, laid-back, contemplative passage set to acosutic guitar, then Sabine coming in to sing the first verse quoted below accompanied by mellow electric guitar, before transitioning to full orchestration and Sabine’s voice soaring high to achieve that signature mix of sound.

Featured lyrics:

Thorns of roses that I feel
Secrecy under the seal
Hear the tolling of the bell
Bring me under your spell

See the mysteries in twilight
They’re turning away
From darkness to light
(Into infinity)

Featured Song: My Last Step Beyond

I’ve introduced Edenbridge a few weeks ago, with the selection, “Winter Winds”, being inspired by the weather of the day.

I could probably say wonderful things about almost any Edenbridge song, but there are a handful that stand out to me as my very favourites. I’m going to embark on featuring each one in turn, roughly in chronological order of release.

For starters, here is “My Last Step Beyond”, from their debut album Sunrise in Eden.

Edenbridge have a habit of including a 10-minute (or longer) song on each of their albums; it’s not uncommon for these songs to be among my favourites (you may have noticed that I like long songs; I find they give composers the space to develop their topics thematically and musically in a way that your average 3-minute song cannot). In any case, for Sunrise in Eden, this song would be it.

Edenbridge put the 10 minutes of “My Last Step Beyond” to great use. The song starts with a pair of guitar sequences, one morphing into the other, that set the tone very effectively. A relatively ordinary verse/chorus passage follows (the weakest part of the song, but it gets better!), which then, with another short guitar sequence and a symphony of bells, transitions into a quiet, contemplative instrumental stretch. Slowly building tension, this eventually erupts into a beautiful piano solo, topped off with a guitar solo (can’t have an Edenbridge song without one of those!). Finally, it’s time for my favourite part: Sabine’s soaring, ethereal vocals bringing the song to a very satisfying conclusion.

This song is a great example of one of the things I like so much about Edenbridge: the way they put an adventurous spin on whatever they sing about – in this case, crossing into the afterlife.

Featured lyrics:

The guardian angels, they’re calling my name
An astral dream in the sky?
They’re dancing at the carnival of souls
They dance into the light, into eternal light

I’m singing the tune in unison with angels
In the key of Lordian harmony
The journey has an end
I’m waiting in command
Never to contend

(No, I don’t know what “Lordian harmony” means. It could be a religious reference (as in “harmony of the Lord”), or perhaps a shout-out to the little-known metal band Lordian Guard).

The journey will continue!

Featured Song: Winter Winds

Today’s featured song is by Edenbridge, an Austrian symphonic metal band.

Edenbridge may not be as well known as Within Temptation or Nightwish, but they’re a true gem, and I’m really glad I stumbled onto them (I don’t remember exactly how; I think their songs “Shine” and “Wild Chase” were included in a compilation of some sort that I came across). Despite being a metal band, their songs have a peaceful, serene quality to them, which together with their signature guitar solos and Sabine Edelsbacher’s soothing vocals make a combination that really captivates me.

The song is “Winter Winds”, a timely choice for a day like today when said winds are cooling Toronto down to a bone-chilling “-13, feels like -22” degrees. (People in, say, Calgary would probably roll their eyes at this, but that makes no matter to me; -13 degrees is plenty to chill my bones, thank you very much.)

Featured Lyrics:

By a long forgotten feeling I believe
In the dream of a summer’s eve

*sigh*… a summer’s eve sounds very nice right now.
